How Fast is Too Fast When it Comes to Losing Weight

There are many things that you can do too much of but this does not apply to things that the body controls. You cannot sleep too much, only as long as you need to. Some depressed people sleep 12 hours per day. You can fast too long or exercise too much.

The reason that you cannot sleep too long is because you cannot control how long you sleep. You can control how little you get but not how much you get. If you doubt this, then try it. Try to sleep 20 hours. You can lie there for 20 hours but will only be asleep if your body decides that you need it. Note that I am not talking about stage 1 sleep where you are drowsy and trying to get to sleep but you are not really sleeping.

They announced on the news, in November 2006, that 70% of American people have trouble sleeping. There is a McDougall website about getting over depression naturally. It says that sleep is depressing so you should not even get the suggested 8 hours. This shows that while there is a limit to genius, there is no limit to stupidity. His other ideas are good, though. I have seen on forums people giving rates of weight loss (weight loss/time) that are too fast. I checked this out and did not find reliable sources saying this. An MD on TV said that people on the same diet can lose weight at different rates. Also MDs think it is safe (and the FDA agrees) to lose many pounds of body fat in an hour with liposuction. Like with sleeping, you do not control how fast you lose weight. That is why you cannot lose weight too fast. Remember the above rule about exceptions, where someone with a serious problem can lose weight too fast.

Some people have fasted to lose weight and have complained that after not eating for 5 days they only lost 2 pounds. I have fasted many times but I was never overweight. People would ask how much I would lose but I did not notice any difference. So I got a scale so I could measure it scientifically. I weighed myself at the beginning of a fast and right before the end of a 4 day fast of pure water. I did gain one pound which does happen sometimes when people have reserve nutrients and are consuming air and water.

Someone could say "you just retained more water." But most people lose water weight during a fast. Regardless of whether I created more bone (people can mend broken bones during a fast) or retained water is the fact that I had no control over the rate of weight loss which in this case was negative one pound.

People can control their efforts to influence this rate. The way to give yourself the fastest rate loss that your body will safely allow is to fast and exercise a lot. Some exercise, like yoga, is OK during a fast. Allan Cott M.D. suggests walking 3 hours a day during a fast to lose more weight and for circulation. These are mild exercises. But you have to be careful about doing a lot of strenuous exercise during a fast. My mother could eat large amounts of fattening foods with lots of bad carbs and fat and still be thin without exercising.

The Secret to a Flat Stomach for the Middle Aged

There is nothing less appealing than having your belly hang over your belt. Hence there is nothing more appealing then having a flat stomach. Especially as you age. Fair or not, it is the physical characteristic that immediately indicates your life style and it's no surprise that it's #1 on every body's hit list. So how do middle aged folks get the "washboard" look?

As with younger people it boils down to nutrition and ab work. What's different is the TYPE of ab work. Nutrition is the easier understood but harder to do aspect. Simply stated, stay away from high carb foods as much as possible (especially after 4:00 pm), keep sugar intake as low as possible (all the time), and minimize your alcohol intake (which is comprised of 100% sugars and carbs). The sugar and carbs, especially in large concentrated amounts, tells your body to store the excess for a rainy day. For most people in general and older people in particular, that will be in the mid-section. Bye-bye washboard. As has been said a million times by everybody, abs won't show through a layer of fat.

If you want to do sit ups, crunches, leg raises, Swiss ball crunches, use a roman chair or any other ab work you can. But what do all these have in common? What areas do all these miss, that middle aged people in particular need? Answers: Contracting or tightening the abdominal muscles and "love handle" work. One basic exercise, done in a variety of ways will handle both requirements. The plank. It's better for older people because it takes all stress off the spine and neck, and provides continous contraction of the entire core area.

My Ab Routine:

1) Assume the basic push up position, keeping a very flat back. Alternately raise each leg off the floor ONE inch and hold for 10 seconds, without allowing any other movement and keeping perfect form. Do at least 8 reps/leg. Your entire core section is contracted during every second of this movement (which is 2 minutes long for 8 reps).

2) Repeat above except this time after you raise your leg ONE inch, during the 10 seconds it's elevated, swing the leg out (toe pointing down) like your trying to touch the wall next to you. Keep the leg straight (no knee bending) and always ONE inch off the floor.

3) Side planks. You look like a cross on its side. Start with the arm towards the floor bent so your on your elbow. Your legs are stacked. Try and raise your hip upwards 3-4 inches, hold for 2-3 seconds and repeat. Do 8 reps. Change arms and do the other side.

4) Side plank, this time arm to the floor is straight, keeping your hand directly below your shoulder. Keep you body as straight as possible (like a cross on its side) and raise your top leg as high as possible. Hold for 2-3 seconds, then lower it. Do 8 reps do the other side.

That's it. In 15 minutes of work your entire mid-section will have been continuously contracted, which is all you need to develop your abdominal muscles at middle age.

Weight Loss - It's in Your Head

When you truly consider the weight-loss process, the battle waged is mostly in your mind. Should I eat the corn muffin with butter or would it be better for me to have margarine or better yet, have jelly? What am I doing eating this muffin anyway? Its so caloric and filled with saturated fat. Im such a pig. I have absolutely zero willpower. Its no wonder youll eat that muffin with the butter and slather jelly on top to quiet that negative self-talk.

What you need more than a diet is a way to shift those negative self-defeating thoughts to more adaptive, positive self-statements. As with most things worth doing, this requires a bit of practice. First, become aware when youre using a negative statement, then determine what about that thought is faulty and finally, replace it with a self-defense response or coping thought. In the corn muffin example, instead of listening to Im such a pig which clearly mislabels who you are, respond with Pigs are animals and I am human. I dont have to be perfect.

Many people cannot change their eating habits until they change their thoughts about food, eating and drinking. By shedding distorted thoughts and replacing them with productive ones, eating habits can be changed. It is possible to rid yourself from many self-critical thoughts, but like any ingrained habit, it takes vigor and vigilance to change. Here are some other thinking distortions to challenge:

Shoulds. Should statements are more about other peoples values, not ones chosen by the person who wants to lose weight. Additionally, should statements reflect an attempt by the dieter to motivate herself without really believing in the value. Better to determine what works for you. I will eat up to two Hershey kisses daily and thoroughly enjoy them.

All-or-Nothing. This kind of reasoning is the foundation for perfectionism. An all-or-nothing individual views the world as black or white. Since there is no allowance for gray areas, the behavior is either perfect or a failure. Ive ruined my diet by eating all that pizza. I cant stay on a diet and Ill just always be fat. Maybe the problem does not arise from the behavior maybe the problem is with the diet that does not allow for pizza. I do not want to give pizza up for the rest of my life, so what I need is a way to include pizza in my diet without feeling like a failure. Let me try having a salad (dressing on the side) before the pizza to take the edge off my hunger.

Good Foods/ Bad Foods. If the truth be told, foods do not misbehave. Foods are not good or bad. While it is true that some foods have more nutrients or are more fiber-dense than others, all foods can be enjoyed. How we think about food colors what we eat and how much we eat. If a food is labeled as bad (such as fries), then for many individuals that food is taboo. When one eventually succumbs to eating the forbidden, French fries, bingeing may result. Rather than continue with dichotomous thinking of good food/bad food, shift to allow space for all foods you like without judgement. Instead of I ate those fries which are so bad for me to I really enjoyed that small portion of fries. They really satisfied me.

Body Distortions. Rather than dwelling on how fat or thin you think your body is, it is extremely helpful to view your body in terms of what it can do for you. For example, when you look in the mirror, instead of zooming in on your stomach which looks five months pregnant, although your last baby was nine years ago tell yourself my body has given life or my body enables me to go where I want to and allows me to have fun.

The conversations that are going on inside your head cannot be stopped. However, what you can do is to be aware of negative self-talk and understand that it has little to do with actual reality. When you believe this, you can respond to the critical voice with a more objective, coping thought. Although negative thoughts may not be stopped entirely, they can be quieted by listening to your compassionate, caring voice. In much the same way you would sympathize and listen to a close friend, listen to yourself. Be your own best friend and chances are youll have greater weight loss success.
