The majority of people who want to lose weight despair when it comes into finding enough hours in a day in order to follow a weight loss and exercise program. If you feel the same you are not alone. Well, let us be realistic for a moment. At the end of a day, after you have worked yourself ragged all day, what is it that you would like the most? Is it, as for most of the people, to sit down have an easy prepacked meal, a pizza or a take away, stretch your legs in front of the TV and do absolutely nothing? Yes! It sounds GOOD. However, the hard reality is; if you follow an unbalanced working and dieting life style long enough you are following a recipe for disaster.

Excess weight may affect you in numerous other ways besides your appearance: self-esteem, physical abilities, longer life and your social and working experience can all be influenced. Additionally, the dangers of being overweight to your health are serious and real: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are all life-threatening health risks. Therefore, it may be weight loss time for you. You might need to take some action and lose the excess weight.

Every individual who need some weight loss would have wish having an easy, perfect and permanent way to lose weight without devoting much time or effort. Ways to Take Off Weight With the Zone Lifestyle System

The Zone diet is a diet plan that pays close attention to calorie intake and physical exercise to achieve results. It is a lifestyle-changing plan to get people to shed weight and get in better physical condition. The main part of this diet plan is the food plan developed by the scientist, Dr. Barry Sears.

The theory of the diet looks at the impact of carbohydrates on the body's insulin levels. Consuming too many carbohydrates causes blood sugar levels to rise sharply, which in turn causes the body to produce insulin, a hormone that reduces blood sugar levels by storing the sugar as fat. It is believed that by consuming the right foods, blood sugar levels can be regulated to keep insulin levels in "the zone," a range where the body burns more fat and stops storing excessive fat.

The plan balances protein and carbohydrate consumption in a three to four ratio, meaning 40% of your calories will come from carbohydrates and 30% from protein (another 30% typically comes from fat). It is important to monitor calories on the Zone plan, with most meals not exceeding five hundred calories each and snacks around one hundred calories each.

Under the program, you eat five times a day (three meals and two snacks), never letting more than five hours pass without consuming food. If you sleep eight hours each night, this means having breakfast within one hour of waking, eating lunch within five hours of breakfast, a snack within five hours of lunch, dinner within two or three hours of snack, and a final snack just before bedtime.

The majority of foods consumed on the Zone diet plan include lean cuts of meat, like chicken or fish and other sources of protein, lots of vegetables and fruits, and a small amount of carbohydrates. Sugar, potatoes, breads, cereals, and rice are the types of carbohydrate rich foods that dieters should avoid eating, but can enjoy occasionally. Dieters must also stop eating pre-packaged foods and high sodium foods.

Exercise is another key aspect of the Zone diet. The program recommends moderate intensity physical exercise for thirty minutes a day, six days per week. Physical activity is supposed to enhance the effectiveness of the Zone program. Other enhancements to the diet include taking nutritional supplements and vitamins.

The Zone program works well for many people, but it requires a lot of dedication. The reason why this program and most other diets fail to work is because many dieters stop before they are able to see results. Many people struggle to stay on any type of diet program because of cravings, uncontrollable appetites or eating habits, or a lack the motivation to lose weight. Hydrate to Lose Weight: Drinking Water & Its Relationship to Weight Loss

Water makes up 75% of the human body, so to say it is vital to
health could be nothing short of an understatement. Drinking water is a necessity for maintaining health, but it helps those of us who are trying to lose weight or decrease fat in ways you may not have considered.

First of all, by drinking water before and during a meal, it makes you feel full sooner. If you feel full sooner, it can help you to stop eating sooner. Secondly, water can be mixed with low calorie concentrates and sipped throughout the day.

By adding flavorings (such as juice concentrate or green tea extract) the water tastes more like food, which can also put off feelings of hunger and keep you feeling more satisfied between meals.

A couple of very important aspects of hydration that dramatically affect weight gain and loss are water retention and kidney function.

First of all, water retention. Water retention is an interesting issue because it is one of those issues that runs completely contrary to how we would imagine it would work. Water weighs about seven pounds per gallon, so its easy to imagine that we could shed a few quick pounds by losing some retained water... but how do we do that? Well, as it turns out, we lose retained water by drinking more water!

The body has such a need for water that it retains extra water if we don't supply the right amount on a daily basis - and most of us do not. By getting into a habit, or regimen, of drinking more water than our body actually needs, our body becomes convinced that it doesn't need to hoarde extra water. Once your body is "convinced" that you are going to provide more than enough water to simply survive, it will let loose of the extra water it has stored up in your cells.

Secondly, let's look at your kidneys. Well not directly at them, but let's talk about them. In order to do their job properly, your kidneys require an enormous amount of water. If the water is not supplied, your body goes to Plan B, which is to enlist the assistance of your liver. Because the liver is able to metabolize fat (turn it into energy), every second your liver spends bailing out the kidneys is a second it isn't burning stored fat. Drinking more water allows the kidneys to run at their optimal level and keeps the liver available to burn fat.

For dieters, there is an additional aspect worth consideration. Because we are attempting to burn EXTRA fat (not simply the supply of fat in our daily diet), we actually create an extra water deficit. It takes water to do the normal work of processing waste from our bodies, and it takes EXTRA water to process the stored fat and waste that comes from that job.

Earlier in the article we shared a few tips on how to drink more water each day. Here are a few more tips to help you start your hydration habit:

1. Whenever you feel the urge to binge or have a hankerin' for something that you KNOW you shouldn't eat or drink, immediately drink a big glass of water. It'll do two things... first it will fill your stomach, preventing you from putting the bad stuff in there, and secondly, it will put some time between you and your craving, giving it a chance to pass.

2. Water out, water in. Make it a habit to drink a glass of water after you use the restroom. Did you remember to shut the light off??

3. Drink with a straw. Some people say that you drink more and drink faster if you use a straw. It's worth a try, right??

7 Ways to Improve Your Cholesterol (and Lose Weight!)

Now all these years people have been worried about high cholesterol levels. But in addition to lowering bad cholesterol, a new study shows that high levels of GOOD cholesterol should also be the focus of our efforts.

In fact, your levels of HDL could be the most important determinant of your risk for heart disease.

First, some definitions...

LDL (low-density lipoprotein): LDL is also known as the "bad" cholesterol. It is the cholesterol that builds up in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease.

HDL (high-density lipoprotein): HDL is also known as the "good" cholesterol. It helps clean out LDL from your arteries, and can decrease your risk of heart disease.

If your HDL is not above 40 mg/dL, then you need to improve it and have it checked every year.

TC (total cholesterol): This is the total amount of cholesterol in the blood, including LDL, HDL, and VLDL.
If your total cholesterol is 240 mg/dL or greater, you have a greater risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

TC:HDL-C ratio: This is called the "total cholesterol to HDL ratio." It is used to give doctors an idea of how much total cholesterol a person has relative to the HDL level. The ratio is calculated by dividing the total cholesterol by the HDL. It is a good measure of heart disease risk.

Okay, now onto the latest findings...this recent study published in the American Heart Journal found that patients that had higher HDL levels had a lower risk of heart attacks. More specifically, people with higher HDL (by 10 mg/dL) had an 11% decrease in heart disease risk.

Okay...so what does that mean? Do everything you can to increase your HDL!

First, you need to get your HDL levels checked...so visit your doctor. And always check with your doctor before making big changes to your nutrition and exercise plan...especially if you are overweight, or otherwise at risk for lifestyle diseases.

Second, a good place to start improving your cholesterol levels is to simply lose weight and to start an exercise program (both aerobic exercise and resistance training will improve cholesterol levels).

And when it comes to achieving healthy cholesterol levels, here are many more specific actions that you should take:

- Eat 6 small meals per day rather than 2-3 large meals.

- Eat a handful of almonds per day (make sure they are not roasted in hydrogenated oils!)

- Eat more fiber by eating almonds, fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, and perhaps even supplement with glucomannan - Get a minimum of 35g of fiber per day

- Reduce your intake of saturated fats & eliminate all trans fats from your diet

- Build muscle mass. There's some evidence that strength-training exercises that build muscle mass can also improve HDL.

- Do intervals - these might be even more effective than regular cardio for increasing HDL

- Both Green Tea and fish oils might help improve cholesterol levels (by both increasing HDL and lowering LDL), but research is not conclusive.

Weight Loss and Nutrition From a Mother's View

When you have a child, as a mother, you do everything possible to make sure your child is given the best nutrition available for that child. You may do some research on breastfeeding your baby verses giving him formula. As your child grows, it's important to make sure your child is given a proper, nutritionally, well balanced meal even down to the snacks that you give your child fruits are better than cookies or chips. Suddenly, as a parent, you become your own nutritionist. You know how much food to give your child so he does not over eat.

You make sure your child has enough protein so he can build his muscles well while growing up or enough vegetables for the vitamins. Should a child come inside reaching for a snack before lunch or dinner, you tell that child it's not time for a snack or it's too late for a snack. When he pulls out too many cookies, you cut it down for a normal portion in order not to have too much sugar. As a mother, you also become a trainer, of sorts, for your child. They need to be outside because the outdoor air is good for them or they need to get some exercise to burn off some of their energy. However, even with all of this knowledge being used towards your children, somewhere in your head, it becomes lost when it comes down to taking care of yourself. As adults, we know we are eating too many foods that will pack on those regretful pounds but we do it anyway. What happens with those words, "your getting too many cookies put some back" or "it's too late for a snack"? As a mother, you portion control everything your child eats and yet, as an adult, you forget what a portion actually looks like for a normal size adult.

When you go out to eat as an adult, nutrition seems to be thrown out the window and what becomes important is "how much am I getting for my dollar being spent". Next, we jump on a scale because our clothes are beginning to fit really snug and realize we've gained way too much weight! So what do we do next? We go spend more of our hard earned money for some type of diet plan to tell us or show us what we really knew all along. What a portion size looks like again. What should we be eating for a snack? How to plan a well balanced diet in order to get adequate nutrition for our bodies. Oh, and yes, they remind us that in order to lose the weight properly, you will need to exercise at least three times per week for at least 30 minutes each time, in order to burn more calories than we are taking in during the week. It just seems so odd that when it comes down to raising our children, as mothers, we are the experts.

However, as for taking care of ourselves as adults, we have to pay someone else to be the expert when the knowledge given really isn't that much different than how we raised our children. When planning a diet, or a healthier way of living, think about what you would feed your children. Plan a well rounded balanced diet. Make sure you cover all of the basic food groups, even down to the snacks you eat and at what time of the day or night you are eating those snacks. When planning your exercise, which again, you should plan on at least doing something three times a week or more, plan something that will keep your interest. Like a child, you may enjoy playing some type of game or sport, such as tennis, racquetball or get involved in some type of team sport such as soccer, softball or football.

Even for an individual person, there are so many ways to exercise that you could do something different every day of the week, from an exercise DVD to one of the newer WII games that provide exercise. Something as simple as walking for thirty minutes can give you the exercise you need and also help give you more energy. I find that when I'm exercising, not only does it help increase my energy, but it also improves my overall attitude and outlook for the day. At any rate, bring back that motherly instinct. Think about the meals you would plan for your children. Would you let them have that snack? Also, would you tell them it's time to turn the television off and get busy doing something more productive? It is really all basic knowledge that lies within most moms. However, as moms, it just needs to be applied to ourselves.

Adult weight loss camps evolved in the 1980's from the traditional children's summer camp experience. Predictably, as the incidence of obesity grew across all age ranges in the 70's and 80's, weight loss camps for kids, teens and adults became popular and gained terrain.

Typically, the weight loss camp setting featured a low calorie diet and a fitness or exercise program. Is counseling available to help make changes in eating and lifestyle choices?

Does the program include stress management and a behavioral component dealing with emotional aspects of eating?

What aftercare support is provided? How long does this last?

The result obtained in the adult weight loss camps shows us that the group work is more efficient than working alone. Some causes of these result are the strictly program applied by the dieters, the food that contains the right calorie intake for weight loss, and the fact that everyone makes new friends and the atmosphere is friendly.
