Weight Loss - Snacks That Keep Weight Off

Nuts alone or combined with a small box of raisins, makes a great high quality fiber-protein snack mix, to help keep your weight off. Nuts are high in protein, fiber and essential nutrients such as folic acid, potassium, magnesium, selenium and healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. Nuts, Particularly walnuts and almonds, have been shown in numerous studies to help prevent heart disease. A one-ounce serving of nuts either alone or combined with a small box of raisins, is an excellent way to boost your energy level and satisfy your appetite for many hours.

Popcorn is a great high fiber, low calorie, low fat snack that's easy to make anywhere. The hot-air popcorn-popper ensures a virtually fat-free, high fiber snack; however, the non or low fat microwaveable varieties are also great, as long as you check to see that the butter or fat content is not too high. Popcorn can be mixed with peanuts, raisins, apple slices and other fruits for variety. You can even bake your popcorn with cinnamon, peanut butter, raisins, ftuit, Pannesan cheese and even garlic.

A plastic baggie of your favorite dry high fiber, whole grain cereal, makes an excellent transportable nutritious snack to take with you anywhere. The addition of some dried ftuit to your travel cereal pack can add flavor and nutrition to your weight control snack. Even the varieties of cereals that are lightly sweetened are great diet snacks provided they're high fiber, whole grain, low sugar and low fat cereals. Check the ingredients label to make sure that there are no more than 1.5 grams of total fat and no more than 8 grams of sugar. Also make sure the cereal has at least 5 grams or more of dietary fiber. There's no need to check the amount of carbohydrates in thecereal, since as we've seen in the section on carbs, counting carbs is bogus. It has nothing whatsoever to do with weight loss.

Losing Fat Fast - An Obese Society

There is so much deception and misinformation in a billion dollar weight loss industry that it is almost like it is designed for losing fat fast and then put it right back on so the manufacturers of these programs can keep lining their pockets selling supplements, prepared meals and charging outrageous monthly fees.

We have lost track of the very simple truth about how to manage our weight. We are told we need to cut the carbs, fat, protein and calories depending upon which popular fad diet we are trying this month. The fact is carbs, fat and proteins are the basic nutrients in food that our body needs to fuel itself to get through the day. How does it make sense that cutting something our body needs is the most effective way to losing fat fast?

It actually is the most effective way of feeling weak, hungry and down right miserable every day and this is the reason almost every program we try will eventually fail. Our natural instinct is to stop doing anything that does not make us fee normal. Depriving our body of essential nutrients is not normal.

There is only one true for losing fat fast and keeping it off for good. That is getting back to the basics of feeding our body the proper mix of nutrients at the proper times during the day. Keeping our metabolism burning calories at a very high rate while still feeding it all the carbs, proteins and fat it needs to keep us feeling good throughout the day. We do not need to spend outrageous amounts of money on meals someone prepares for us or ingest harmful "man made" pills that are the latest miracle weight loss drug. We all know that almost everyone of these pils ends up proving harmful and gets taken off the market. besides the fact that in most cases they simply do not work.

Almost every one of these popular programs and drugs come with a disclaimer about "the proper amount of exercise" and they do this because that is actually how you are losing weight but at the same time you feel miserable because you are not providing the fuel necessary to sustain the program they want you to follow.

While exercise is essential to a healthy heart and body it is not the first essential key to losing fat fast. Learning how to balance your nutrients and actually eating enough meals a day to feel good and be able to stay on track is the first key. The average person will get the minimal amount of physical activity required throughout there normal daily activities.

You must start with good eating habits that do not leave you feeling hungry and provides the necessary fuel for the body. We are not an obese society because we eat, we are obese becuase we eat wrong and spend our time trying weight loss plans that are simply not designed to keep the wight off.

Fruit, the Enemy of Those Desiring Weight Loss

Each week you read in the newspaper about articles concerning the rise in obesity. With that rise, so many people are desperately doing what they can to lose weight. Supplement companies are out there preying on these people with brand new products that miraculously lose weight in so many days. There are new diets coming out left and right, claiming this is the diet that will get that weight off and keep it off. Meanwhile, as nutritionists cringe at seeing all these wacky diets and products being displayed they maintain to eat a balanced diet that usually contains fruit. Fruit has always been viewed as a healthy choice, but is this one of the reasons why people dont lose weight as fast as they want to?

I know what youre saying, That cant be. Fruit is..well fruit. Here is the deal and it all breaks down to sugar. Fruit has a lot of natural sugars in it and if people who are looking to lose weight eat a lot of fruit or fruit juices, they could be preventing the breakdown of bodyfat.

When you eat something that is comprised of a lot of sugar, lets say Coke, your body is feeling a sugar spike. Your pancreas releases a lot of insulin, which helps to remove the excess insulin and store it in your liver and muscles as glycogen. It usually releases a lot more insulin than necessary. The insulin gets rid of a ton of sugar, so that in a short time, you will hit a low sugar level and will start craving even more sugar. Which means you will probably eat something you know you shouldnt like a candy bar; something that has absolutely no nutritional value or benefit to you.

Here is the second effect of that Coke. Your pancreas secretes another hormone called glucagon. It helps to release bodyfat as a fuel for your cells. If the pancreas is secreting all this insulin for the sugar, then it suspends the secretion of glucagons which keeps your fat stored in your body. This is not good. We want to get rid of that bodyfat so you can feel and look better. But fruit is good for you, right? Obviously, Coke has a lot more to it than just sugar, but if you compare 100 calories of Coke to 110 calories of orange juice, the Coke has 27 grams of sugar and the OJ has 24 grams of sugar. Pretty close comparison, dont you think?

The orange juice and fruit in general obviously have some other important nutrients in it. Im not saying that it is bad, but what I am saying is that if you seriously want to lose weight you might have to modify your fruit intake. If you really enjoy the taste of fruit have it for just one serving of the day. Also, eat the fruit with a combination of a high protein source. This will help delay the absorption of the fruit and not spike the insulin levels so much. To make up for the antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that you might be missing from the fruits, you need to eat more vegetables.

Fruit isnt bad and I dont want anyone to not eat fruit again. But if you are overweight and serious about the weight loss that you desire, you need to take a hard look at your diet and cut back on the sugar that your body is ingesting. Good carbohydrate sources that wont spike your insulin levels so much are sweet potatoes, brown rice, or whole wheat sources. Combine this game plan with a good exercise program and you will be shedding the pounds in no time.

Exercise & Low Carb (Part 2)
or Can you be a marathoner while doing low carb?

I am convinced that you certainly can be. My current estimate or goal for my half marathon in two weeks is to be sub two hours. I know other marathoners (both half and full) doing Atkins, and I am attempting to prove myself to be another one. The scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals were actually quite interesting and as far as I can tell NOT disputed by any other researchers.

Real life anecdotes are nice, but having science and published reports to back you up legitimizes what I have saying all along. Once you get acclimated to burning fat you no longer live under the same dread of bonking or running out of glycogen during your exercise.
